Well Christmas is coming up, and my mom asked me what I want. I narrowed it down to two djembes, now I need your help...

This one is BEAUTIFUL!!!

http://www.djembe.biz/product_info.php/products_id/1335

I'm in a tribal, jam band, drum circle setting, so this would be perfect. Also it's handmade in Africa so I think this has the craftsmanship behind it.
But I'm kinda worried about rope tuning, I'm a beginner, and it looks like a daunting task.

Then I was also looking at getting this. The Remo djembe 14WX25H" in the Earth finish...

This one doesn't have as much detail as the first one, it's definately not as good looking, but it has a simple look to it. But it is key tuned, which is a whole lot easier on me, and it's a Remo so I've heard good things about the sound, while I can only assume the first one sounds as good as it looks.

Does anyone have any advice for me? Any would be gratefully accepted.

Thanks and Take it Easy...
Sam

Well, I'm on my fifth djembe now, and while I've not had the rope tuned one at which you're looking, I will say that Remo has been my favorite. As far as rope tuning is concerned, it's not terrible, and I think there's a certain classy look to rope tuned djembes (not that that's a concern, though).

Basically, I think you'd be happy with either, but I would personally go with a Remo.

*Holy Censor, Batman*, I typed about half an hour and accidentaly erased the text! Mad
Anyway, this is what I talked about. Please ask for any explanation.

I prefer rope tuning over bold tuning.
If you buy a djembé, take a look at:
-skin
-wood
-size
-bass
-rope
and most of all, of course: the sound
Also, check out the used ones.

Well I'm not really sure what to look for. What I do know is...

It's made from a single piece of kiln-dried, hand worked, Osese(Tweneboa) wood, 24"x15", strong and durable nylon rope, back calf skins not belly skins they say it gives a mellower sound, and the skins are tested for anthrax and other diseases, never hurts to be careful I guess.
I'm suspecting it will have alot of bass from the size and the skin, but I'm unsure on how the higher timbre sounds with be.

Does that info help? Thanks for all the help so far.

i just got a djembe from africa, I love it. It is rope tuned, and it is really nice. My dad was visiting africa and got me one, as well as a talking drum. I am looking forward to using them more in the future

I don't know about the influence on the sound due to the type of skin. I've got a goat skin and something' of a water cow (don't know what that animal is called in English. Water buffle?) on my djembés. I think the quality and shape of the wood is of more inmortance. Thats one big djembe, you've got there! The wood seems to be high-quality.

You can't be cetain about the bass sound. As it has got a big diametre, it will have lots of bass, so there are two possibilities:
- it produces the bass everyone is looking for: fairly short, deep, powerful
- it produces that 'BOOOOOIIIIIING' so you'll have to tighten the rope, risken to loose the bass because the tone will be too high in the end.
The higher sounds (eg slaps) you'll don't have to worry about that too much. Almost every djembé sounds good in high tones. And if it doesn't, tightening the djembe will solve this.
Good Luck!

I would contest that if it doesn't have rope, it's not really a djembe Wink
