Our church bought a new Pearl Export set and it came with a Planet Z 3 cymbal pack. The high-hats and a crash ride. So until we purchase a crash...

I'm having trouble getting the right sound out of it. I can get a good ride sound, but how do I get a good crash sound? I've tried hitting the edge of the cymbal with the edge of my stick but it's a really low/ringing sound unless I tighten my grip. What's the trick?

Honestly, Planet Z's are not good cymbals at all, that's probably the problem. I've noticed that crash/rides tend to be more on the ride side, so it might be hard to get a good crash sound out of them

Thanks for the reply...

I guess when we get a new crash we can set that off to the side as a ride cymbal.

What kind of crash do you recommend for the set we have to mix in well? I have a zildjian thin crash here at home, but it makes the same noise as the crash/ride at church, that low ringing sound, but then again I don't have felt washers on it... lol. Just need one that I don't have to tighten my grip on and can hit with a loose hand and get that good crash sound.

Zildjian? Paiste? Sabian?

actually if you can do it right, the high hats sound very nice, if you can make it have the right sound, ride/crash sucks noodles

No trick. That's what crashing a ride sounds like. It sounds much more acceptable from the audience though.
