I'm looking at getting a small, basic mixer and a couple of mics for my drum practice space primarily so I can practice using headphones along with CD/MP3 input (and occasionally recording myself). On a budget, so I'm not looking for top of the line, more interested in the biggest bang for a few bucks.

Since I'm not micing the whole kit, I'm planning on using the "Recorderman" technique with a couple of overheads. I'm assuming those should be condensers, but not sure what type/style. I heard of some people using large diameter condensers; are they appropriate for overhead drum micing? Secondly, how important are the low frequency roll off and dB attentuation switches that some mics have? Are they something you use "every now and then" or are they essential?

Please share any advice/recommendations that would be helpful in this situation. Thanks.
